Ian has 25+ years’ experience in the waste industry having been Chief Executive Officer of Biffa plc, leading the IPO of the business in 2016. He was previously co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Greenstar UK, a waste management and recycling business which was acquired by Biffa plc in 2010 and brings a significant expertise in waste management to the company’s Board of Directors.
Ian trained as a Chartered Accountant at Arthur Andersen after graduating with a degree in Accounting and Finance from Middlesex University.
Ian is also a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Audit Committee of Simec Atlantis Energy plc, a renewable energy business involved in the tidal power and advanced biomass power generation business.
Chief Executive Officer
Phillip Piddington was appointed Chief Executive Officer in July 2020, following the acquisition of Viridor by KKR, having previously served as Managing Director. He first joined the company as Chief Operating Officer of the newly established energy division in 2014. Prior to this, he was Director of Biomass for RWE Innogy GmbH, the renewables firm within the RWE Group, and a member of the Board of RWE Innogy UK.
Phil has gained more than 30 years of management experience in the energy business, among others as MD of BP Energy Ltd and Head of Cogen Asset Management for RWE Npower in the UK.
In addition to his Viridor responsibilities he is Chairman of the Environmental Services Association and a member of the UK Resources Council.
Chief Financial Officer
Nick was appointed Chief Financial Officer on completion of Viridor’s acquisition by KKR in July 2020. He was previously Chief Financial Officer of SIG plc, the listed specialist distributor of building materials, and prior to that, Chief Financial Officer of the retirement housebuilder, McCarthy & Stone plc.
At McCarthy & Stone he led the November 2015 IPO on behalf of its private equity investors.
Nick trained as a chartered accountant with EY, and has also worked in corporate finance as an investment banker for ING Barings, and in senior finance roles at British Gas and at Centrica’s upstream oil and gas business.
He lives in rural Somerset with his wife and three teenage children, and fills his weekends looking after his pigs and cider apple trees.
Paul joined the Viridor Board in 2014 and is responsible for sales and marketing, business development; Local Authority contracts and fuel supply; major bids and bid management; planning and permitting; and Viridor Resource Management (VRM) – the specialist unit that is responsible for trading all the inputs and output for Viridor’s recycling facilities.
Prior to joining Viridor, Paul was the Vice President for Local & Devolved Government within BT plc’s Global Services Division and was responsible for all of BT’s business with Britain’s local authorities and with the devolved governments in Scotland and Wales. Before that Paul was the Commercial Director for BT’s Global Services Division, Director of Corporate Finance for the BT Group and spent four years working in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Corporate Finance division in London.
Paul is a chartered accountant, having qualified with Coopers & Lybrand in 1995, after graduating from the University of York with a 2:1 in Biology.
Elliot Rees was appointed as Finance Director in May 2016 having previously joined Viridor in 2013 as Financial Controller.
Before joining Viridor, Elliot spent 17 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, working with clients across a wide range of sectors. During this time he primarily worked within the Assurance division of the Wales and West business unit of the UK practice, he also spent 2 years in Auckland, New Zealand.
Elliot is a fully qualified member of ICAEW (ACA) having qualified after graduating from the University of Bristol with a 1:1 in Mathematics.
